2026-04-092022 National Common Entrance Exam Results Released
The Federal Government has released the 2022 results for the National Common Entrance Examination, a crucial test for admission into the nation's 104 unity colleges. The examination, administered by the National Examinations Council (NECO), took place on May 7 across the country. During the announcement in Abuja on Monday, the Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu, who was represented by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Mr. David Adejo, revealed that Ajidapa Mariam, an indigene of Sokoto State, achieved the highest score with 201 marks. Idara Obot from Akwa Ibom State secured the second position with a score of 200. The lowest score recorded in the examination was 1, achieved by 15 candidates from various states. Mr. Adejo highlighted the expansive reach of the examination, stating that it was conducted not only in Nigeria but also in the Republic of Benin and Togo. A total of 71,738 pupils participated, comprising 34,030 males and 37,708 females. The attendance rate was high, with 96 percent of registered candidates, or 68,633 pupils, sitting for the exam. The remaining 4 percent were absent for various personal reasons. Lagos State registered the highest number of candidates with 19,518, of whom 18,787 sat for the exam. The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) followed with 8,623 registered candidates, while Anambra State was third with 5,335 registrations, and 265 candidates absent. Conversely, Kebbi State recorded the lowest registration with only 74 candidates. The Minister also noted that the 2022 examination saw a higher number of female student participants than males. The ministry reiterated its commitment to the established admission criteria, which include 60% on merit, 30% on equality of states, and 10% for exigencies. In a significant directive, the Minister ordered that the National Common Entrance Examination should henceforth be conducted in April each year, with the entire admission process to be concluded by the end of May. The Registrar of the National Examination Council (NECO), Prof. Ibrahim Wushishi, described the 2022 Unity Schools examination results as an improvement over the previous year’s, showcasing “remarkable performances”.

2026-04-23UniAbuja Implements 'No Work, No Pay' Amidst ASUU Strike
University of Abuja Management Enforces 'No Work, No Pay' The University of Abuja management has announced the implementation of a 'No Work, No Pay' policy for any staff found absent from their duty posts. This decision comes as a faction of the institution's Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) continues its industrial action. Vice-Chancellor Abdul-Rasheed Na’Allah stated that a circular has been issued, mandating all academic staff to resume their teaching duties. Failure to comply will result in the forfeiture of salaries. Professor Na’Allah emphasized the principle of not paying for work not performed, adding that the university management is actively addressing the grievances raised by the striking ASUU members. However, ASUU has indicated that no resolution or agreement was reached following a meeting held over a week ago. The union reported a lack of communication from the university since that meeting. Background of the Strike The institution's ASUU chapter initiated an indefinite strike on May 2nd. Their grievances include accusations of the university management violating its establishment laws, particularly concerning staff appointments and promotions in the absence of a governing council. The union also alleges that the university has shortchanged ASUU in the establishment of the UniAbuja Microfinance Bank, despite ASUU being a stakeholder and shareholder since 2017. Sylvanus Ugoh, the union's chairperson, also criticized the recent advertorial for the position of a vice chancellor to succeed Na’Allah. He argued that appointing a vice chancellor is the sole responsibility of the university's governing council, which is currently non-existent. The absence of governing councils in Nigerian tertiary institutions, including UniAbuja, stems from a directive issued by President Bola Tinubu last June, which dissolved all government parastatals. The ASUU national body recently issued a two-week ultimatum to the Nigerian government, demanding the reinstatement of councils whose tenures have not expired and the reconstitution of those whose tenures have lapsed. ASUU contends that the lack of governing councils has led to numerous irregularities within the universities. Despite these ongoing disputes, the University of Abuja management, under Vice-Chancellor Na’Allah, maintains that steps are being taken to resolve the issues in contention with the union, with agreements reportedly reached on some matters.
