Continue readingA new study published in the Journal of Educational Psychology and Security provides critical data backing the urgent need for nationwide student safety campaigns like the one just launched by Absolute Solution (AbS). The research discovered a direct and measurable link between students' perceptions of school insecurity and their academic performance, mental health, and long-term educational aspirations. What the Study Discovered Conducted across several regions with varying security challenges, the study surveyed over 5,000 secondary and university students. Key findings include: 1. Academic Impact: Students who reported high levels of concern for their personal safety at school showed a 15-20% average decrease in standardized test scores and classroom engagement. 2. Psychological Toll: These students were significantly more likely to exhibit symptoms of anxiety and chronic stress, which researchers term "ambient trauma." 3. Future Outlook : A climate of fear was correlated with a reduced likelihood of students pursuing higher education or ambitious career paths, effectively shrinking their future horizons. Why This Research Matters " This isn't just about physical safety; it's about cognitive safety ," explained lead researcher Dr. Amina Chike. " When a student's brain is preoccupied with threat detection, the mental bandwidth for learning, creativity, and critical thinking is severely compromised. The trauma of events like the St. Mary's Catholic School attack creates a ripple effect that undermines the entire educational ecosystem." The study validates that school insecurity is not only a security crisis but a profound educational and developmental crisis. How the Research Was Conducted · Quantitative Surveys : Measuring safety perceptions, academic grades, and psychological well-being. · Qualitative Interviews : Capturing personal narratives from students, teachers, and parents in affected communities. · Longitudinal Data : Tracking a cohort of students over 18 months to observe changes correlated with security incidents. Implications for Educators & Policymakers · For Educators & Schools : The research strongly supports integrating safety awareness and psychological first aid into the curriculum. Programs led by student ambassadors, like the AbS Ambassadors model, can foster peer-to-peer support and trusted reporting channels. · For Policymakers : Investment must be dual-pronged: strengthening physical security infrastructure and funding large-scale digital awareness initiatives and mental health resources. Public-private partnerships, as demonstrated by AbS's campaign, are crucial for amplifying reach. · For Communities : Creating a unified front, as called for by the AbS campaign, is essential. Community-wide safety tips and vigilance can help create the "cognitive safety" students need to learn. His performance is part of a larger trend, as 12,414 out of over 1.9 million candidates scored 300 and above , with only 4,756 achieving scores of 320 and above . This marks a significant improvement compared to the previous year's results, where only 8,000 candidates scored above 300 points . The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) recently released the 2025 UTME results, revealing that over 1.5 million candidates scored below 200 , the average benchmark. The UTME, which is scored out of a total of 400 marks , tests candidates in four core subjects, with Use of English being mandatory. Candidates select three additional subjects relevant to their intended fields of study. Dr. Tunji Alausa , the Minister of Education, noted that these results reflect the government's ongoing efforts to combat exam malpractice. Olamide's father, Niran Aderibigbe , expressed profound gratitude for his son's achievements and hopes that Olamide will pursue a degree in Architecture at either Covenant University or the University of Ibadan .
